Many people, including inexperienced attorneys, think that bankruptcy is simple. To quote a first-year law student on their first day in bankruptcy class, “It is just filling out several forms.” On the last day of class, the same student was asked the same question, but their answer was dramatically different: “I did not realize how much I needed to know about every area of law when filling out bankruptcy forms. The bankruptcy process is complicated; the wrong choice can cause someone to lose their home, vehicle, or life savings.”
The following articles by attorneys Sondra O. Bryson and Rachel Foley explain the reality behind filling out those “simple” forms and some of the consequences. It’s Not Just Filling Out Forms! Expose what could be some serious consequences of filing bankruptcy and Understanding the Attorney’s Role – what the attorney’s role should be in every bankruptcy. As published in the NACBA’s Consumer Bankruptcy Journal Spring 2025.
